Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Biscay, Minnesota. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair analysis, with testing locations across all cities nationwide. To conduct the test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is typically required. These tests can detect substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specified options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Many businesses, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair testing over standard urine analysis. Hair tests are favored by organizations with strict drug-free policies, court systems, and probation services due to their extended detection window, typically up to 90 days. The tests are conducted under supervision and are challenging to manipulate. However, urine tests remain the preferred method for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Using hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by locking biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of length 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair—the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it’s advised to collect 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the entry of a sample into a laboratory system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry tasks not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial, rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to negate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. All samples positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing among the hardest methodologies.

To confirm any positive result from screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used. All samples that test positive initially undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The whole process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: It’s extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supply past data: It can show a trend of drug use over a stretch of time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually involves the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
