Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing throughout Blooming Prairie, Minnesota. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have facilities nationwide in every city that conduct these tests. Hair samples generally need to be 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for screening. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer this over the usual urine test. Hair follicle tests are especially valued by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation departments. A standout advantage is its 90-day detection window, an observed sample collection process, and minimal likelihood of tampering. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is considered an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a longitudinal record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers an approximate detection period of up to 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Collect a 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp to acquire 100mg, the preferred amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In laboratory analysis of a drug test result, the primary stages are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with entering a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid examination for drug abuse. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug use in most samples, a positive finding requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening need secondary verification.

For samples deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other modes (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screenings the most challenging method to execute.

Screening results indicating positives are validated using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory processing from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with their limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is almost impossible, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a timeline of drug use over time, unlike recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly relative to other testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair hue and distinct individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment itself targets the hair strand rather than the root beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Blooming Prairie, MN, hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine tests by offering a superior detection period. While urine tests are limited to recent use, hair tests cover up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive view of substance use. This accuracy ensures more reliable decision-making in compliance-driven sectors.

Furthermore, the reliability of hair testing methods means these can overcome tampering and adulteration that urine tests are vulnerable to. Together, these benefits offer employers a robust solution to uphold their zero-tolerance policies effectively.

Extended Detection Window

One of the notable benefits of hair follicle drug tests in Blooming Prairie, MN, is their extended detection window. With the ability to detect drug use up to 90 days back, these tests provide employers a holistic view into an individual's substance history, beyond what urine tests can offer.

This longer window of detection fills a crucial gap in assessing behavior over time, helping employers make informed decisions regarding current and potential employees' histories.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Blooming Prairie, MN, is designed as a tamper-resistant method, significantly decreasing the possibility of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
