Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Branch, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, rest assured that Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, with testing facilities available in cities across the nation that are equipped to perform hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown of your head, or body hair can be employed in most instances. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a common method for drug screening. A growing number of employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers often utilize hair follicle tests. These tests offer a substantial advantage in detecting drug use over a longer period of up to 90 days, collected in a monitored setting, making it exceedingly difficult to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. If gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for evaluation and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It is advisable to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair might be utilized. The term head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of a drug test outcome consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process involves confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary method to assess drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient manner to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be acceptable in legal contexts. Any samples that yield presumptive positive results in Screening require an additional confirmation.

Should a sample yield presumptive positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is significantly challenging to manipulate the results of a hair drug test, thereby enhancing their accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited in detecting recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly named "hair follicle tests", the examination evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
