Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Brook Park, Minnesota. Specializing in hair and alcohol screening, our centers nationwide facilitate the testing process. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has risen, now favored by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine testing. It’s an essential tool for enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies and monitoring probation conditions. A key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection method, making it resistant to tampering. Yet, urine tests remain the choice for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. This technique allows for the tracking of substance use over an extended period by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair samples can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to roughly a 3-month period. This method of sample collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp can yield 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, it is suggested to use 150mg of the hair specimen. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In circumstances where scalp hair is scarce, equivalent amounts of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result can be broken down into four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing to integrate into the laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary analysis to identify drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most cases, a positive outcome requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for further preparation in Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed as needed before confirmation. Every stage of the laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the standards of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, which is longer than the duration for urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Shows usage history: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become observable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Brook Park, MN, hair follicle drug tests surpass urine tests, offering superior detection reliability. While urine tests are common, hair testing provides an extended detection period, up to three months, ensuring a broader assessment of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
