In Brookston, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're in need of drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide. For an effective test, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is often required. Hair tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored solutions.

Recently, the trend in drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for it over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is ideal for workplaces with strict no-drug policies, legal requirements, or those on probation. Its major advantage is the extended 90-day detection window and the difficulty of tampering, providing reliable results for long-term drug use evaluation. However, for detecting recent usage within five days, urine tests remain preferable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand. With samples collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within an approximately 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp weighs around 100mg, which is ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is preferred. A jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of laboratory drug testing consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is logged into the lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering additional details not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although Screening affords an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, positive results require confirmation to hold up in court. Presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If screening suggests a positive result, more hair is gathered from the primary sample to prepare for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at lower concentrations than seen in other methods, like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screen is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Pre-confirmation, all presumptive positives may be washed. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Unlike urine tests, hair drug tests can track up to 90 days of drug use.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The integrity of hair drug tests makes them highly reliable.
  • Provides historical data: This testing offers insights into consistent drug use over time, rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug consumption.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
