Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Burnett, Minnesota. Whether you need a test for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair testing is backed by nationwide centers available for performing these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is generally required. Our tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other tailored hair testing options.

The hair follicle drug test has become increasingly common in recent years for drug testing requirements. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer these over conventional urine tests. Those adhering to strict no-drug policies, including court-mandated testing and probation monitoring, benefit greatly from the extended detection period hair follicle drug tests offer, which can detect drug use up to 90 days and are difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests are typically more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have become recognized as a significant approach for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains evidence of alcohol and drug usage over a longer term by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. It is easy to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hairs (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is preferable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When noting head hair, it solely refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing laboratory results of drug tests are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample's initial integration into the lab’s procedures. This process includes checking that the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entries that aren't covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes an initial assessment for drug usage. While this stage is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug presence in most cases, positive results from Screening must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that show a presumptively positive result during Screening require further verification.

If results are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this part, substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the toughest methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as required before confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern over time rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent consumption: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variances: Factors like hair shade and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being titled "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis inspects the hair strand, not the follicle unseen beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
