Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Caledonia, Minnesota. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol test via hair analysis, our specialty service extends across numerous locations nationwide, where our facilities can administer such evaluations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice. Hair sampling can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific assessments.

In recent years, the hair follicle method has gained favor for drug tests over traditional urine analysis. Several employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing, given its stringent policies against drug misuse. Hair follicle analysis offers a significant advantage with its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, all while being incredibly difficult to subvert. Nevertheless, for recent use identification within the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

An effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption is hair analysis. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding indicators within the strands as they grow. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can present a detection timeline for alcohol and other drugs extending up to roughly 3 months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a standard #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg, which is the optimal sample for initial testing and subsequent confirmation. For greater analytical requests such as EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Specifically, head hair refers only to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair (including facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample entry into the lab system, verifying proper seal and shipment, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drug abuse substances. Although it provides a cost-efficient measure to rule out drug presence on a majority of samples, any positive results from Screening must undergo confirmation to be viable in legal situations. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must proceed to a verification stage.

For samples testing presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and prepared for the Extraction stage. In this phase, the concentration of drugs is isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing methodologies.

Confirmation of positive Screening outcomes employs techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are appropriately cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes verification under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter windows found in urine tests.
  • High authenticity: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical usage insights: It can exhibit a timeline of substance use over an extended duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Drugs only become noticeable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally comes at a higher cost relative to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aging and individual hair growth factors, including hair color, may impact metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Caledonia, MN, the benefits of hair follicle testing significantly overshadow those of urine testing. With hair analysis, you secure superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which identify only recent usage, hair tests can reveal drug intake over a much longer timeframe. This makes hair testing an excellent choice for those enforcing strict substance policies.

The extended detection window of hair testing provides a broader overview of an individual's drug use history, covering up to 90 days. This allows employers to better assess the true habits of employees or candidates. Moreover, the collection of hair samples is less invasive and reduces the chances of tampering, preserving the integrity of each test.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Caledonia, MN, is its extended detection window. With a capability to trace substance use for up to 90 days, it covers a broader evaluation period compared to other methods. Employers can gain a clear, extensive view of an individual's history with substances, aiding in informed decision-making.

This long-term detection is particularly beneficial in assessing patterns of drug use, offering a comprehensive picture rather than just recent activity. Hair follicle tests become a vital tool for providing historical context, allowing organizations to better align their hiring and retention strategies with their drug-free workplace policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
