In Champlin, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether it's for detecting drugs or alcohol, our centers across the nation are equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the scalp or body. Our hair analysis is highly versatile, with options for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other specific tests.

The preference for hair follicle testing over traditional methods has grown. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now favor this approach for its reliability. Used by firms enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation officers, its key advantage is in the lengthy detection timeline of up to 90 days. However, urine tests remain optimal for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for detecting the use of alcohol and drugs. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding markers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for laboratory testing of drug results involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation stages.

Accessioning encompasses initiating sample processing into a laboratory system. This includes checking that the sample is sealed and sent correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to negate drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires validation for legal acceptability. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

To confirm a positive screening outcome, techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are applied. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The total laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection window.
  • High test integrity: The complexity of altering hair drug test results enhances accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It offers insight into drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensiveness: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Variable results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
