In Circle Pines, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require a hair or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities ready in every city nationwide for hair sample analysis. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized as required.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for detecting substance use. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for these tests over conventional urine screenings. These are pivotal for organizations with strict zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers. Hair tests provide an extended detection window, generally up to 90 days, and the method is tough to tamper with, although urine tests remain superior for substance detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

The assessment of drug and alcohol use through hair testing has gained recognition as an effective technique. Hair strands capture biomarkers within its fibers, offering a long-term profile of substance consumption. When obtained near the scalp, the hair testing window can span approximately three months for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, presenting a high resistance to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment from roughly 200 strands of hair, equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil, proximate to the scalp yields 100 mg, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, or extending beyond 10 panels, a 150 mg specimen is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale for specimen measurement. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test analysis includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is introduced into a laboratory's system, which involves ensuring proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial evaluation for substances of abuse. Though efficient to mostly rule out drug consumption across samples, legal validation of a positive result requires confirmation. Thus, samples with presumptive positives in Screening need further verification.

When a sample tests presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is utilized from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase retrieves drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than via other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), showcasing the complexity of hair drug screening.

Verification of a positive screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests show a shorter detection frame.
  • Challenge to manipulate: It is significantly challenging to alter a hair drug test result, enhancing the accuracy of findings.
  • Insight into usage pattern: It can reveal a prolonged drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become recognizable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal growth differences can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the subsurface hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
