Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug examinations in Clear Lake, Minnesota. If a drug or alcohol test using hair is needed, we provide specialized hair testing services across all cities in the nation. For testing, it's generally necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Hair tests can measure drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requirements.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards the hair follicle test. It is now favored by many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts over the regular urine test. Hair follicle tests are ideal for zero-tolerance employers, the court system, and those on probation. Their major advantage is an extended detection window, potentially up to 90 days, observed during collection and very hard to falsify. For drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the burgeoning hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and conveniently transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 strands (about as thick as a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the material is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial enrollment of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial expedited examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means of ruling out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to perform.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that feature a briefer detection span.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is exceedingly arduous to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Conveys historical data: It can illustrate a usage pattern over time, rather than highlighting just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to spot recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests carry a higher cost than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine tests in Clear Lake, MN? Simple: superior accuracy and detection. While urine tests only capture recent drug use, hair tests identify usage dating back months. This provides employers a clearer picture of substance history, cementing hair testing as the preferred choice in comprehensive drug monitoring.

Comparing hair follicle and urine testing, the former boasts unbeatable detection accuracy. Hair tests reach beyond the limits of urine, capturing a wider timeframe of drug use. For Clear Lake employers, this means enhanced reliability and informed decisions in maintaining workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
