Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Clements, Minnesota. Specializing in hair tests, we have locations nationwide that can conduct these tests if you need a hair drug or alcohol test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from your head or body. Hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG or other specific options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methodologies. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over standard urine ones. This method is popular among employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected in a monitored setting, and hard to cheat. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal quantity for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is beneficial. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer explicitly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a swift initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although it provides a cost-effective way to rule out drug use for most samples, positive screening results require confirmation for court acceptance. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is separated from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are proportionately extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those found in other testing methods (e.g. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing uniquely challenging.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptively positive samples are washed before Confirmation, if necessary. The laboratory processes from Accessioning to Confirmation are upheld under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage history: Hair tests can outline drug usage patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not for recent usage: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and differences in individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Clements, MN, hair follicle testing significantly outshines urine tests in many aspects. With a broader detection window and greater accuracy, hair tests have become the preferred choice for many. They offer a detailed look into an individual's drug history unlike the comparatively limited scope of urine tests. Their ability to ensure reliability and detailed insights places them a step above conventional urine testing methods.

Extended Detection Window

One of the most compelling advantages of hair follicle testing in Clements, MN is its extended detection window. This method can trace drug activity for up to 90 days. This prolonged window gives employers a more comprehensive glance into an individual’s past substance use, ensuring informed hiring and monitoring decisions. The elongated detection period offers an in-depth overview of drug intake over time, crucial for making strategic employment choices.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Clements, MN offers a robust defense against tampering. The testing process minimizes the potential for sample adulteration, providing results that are both reliable and difficult to dispute. By significantly reducing tampering risks, hair tests ensure that the outcomes reflect the true drug-use history, offering peace of mind with irrefutable data points. This integrity makes hair testing a trusted method for accurate analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
