Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Climax, Minnesota. Specialized in hair and alcohol tests, we provide hair assessments through our nationwide centers, including all cities. Typically, hair samples require 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body. Testing options range from drugs to alcohol (ETG) and tailored analyses.

The hair follicle test has grown as a preferred method for detecting drugs, increasingly used by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Especially favored by entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, these tests offer a major advantage with their 90-day detection period and observed collection, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for testing recent use within five days, the urine test remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can extend a detection window of up to around 90 days for alcohol and other substances. This method is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This process confirms the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in court procedures. Samples deemed potentially positive in Screening must undergo rigorous confirmation.

If the Screening indicates a potential positive, an additional portion of hair is taken from the original sample and set up for Extraction. This stage involves drug extraction from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug testing is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive undergo washing as part of confirmation if required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is supervised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can find drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to deceive: Hair drug testing is hard to manipulate, making results more reliable.
  • Provides a usage trend: It offers a timeline of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than alternative drug evaluation methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test actually evaluates the hair strand instead of the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Climax, MN

Hair follicle testing provides distinct advantages over traditional urine tests in Climax, MN. With a broader detection window, hair tests reveal substance use over several months, unlike urine counterparts which only detect recent consumption. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
