In Crystal, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing allows us to serve clientele across various U.S. locations. Generally, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for testing. We offer diverse hair analysis options including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a method for drug screening. It is increasingly used by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts as an alternative to standard urine tests. Not only do hair tests provide extended detection periods of up to 90 days, but they also minimize the risk of tampering due to direct observation during collection. Urine tests, however, remain the preferred option for recent drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands serve as a timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. By taking samples near the scalp, hair tests can detect alcohol and drug exposure for a period of nearly three months. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is somewhat challenging, and samples can be easily transported.

By cutting a 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs from near the scalp, 100mg of hair can be obtained, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmatory tests. When conducting EtG, supplemental testing, or panels beyond ten, a sample of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent sample of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types of hair (such as facial and underarm).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure comprises four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a specimen within a lab system. This process checks that the sample is appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and enters any supplementary data that an electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. It is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in the bulk of samples, although a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Any sample that tests as presumptively positive during Screening requires further verification.

If Screening results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample to undergo Extraction. This process involves extracting drugs from hair at a lower concentration than other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to carry out.

Every positive from the Screening is verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptively positive undergo washing if necessary before Confirmation. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly unlikely, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: These tests can reflect patterns in drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing methods, hair tests tend to be pricier.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
