Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Dayton, Minnesota. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers located in every city across the nation capable of conducting the tests. Ideally, a sample should include 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the top of the head, but body hair may be used if needed. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method in drug screening processes. Numerous employers, judiciary bodies, and professionals in substance abuse counseling now opt for hair drug tests rather than traditional urine analysis. Organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers favor this testing method. Its main advantage is a longer detection span of up to 90 days, securely collected under observation, and extremely difficult to falsify. For detecting recent drug use within five days, however, urine tests still hold the top spot for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strand, offering an extended history of substance use. Obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to roughly three months for drugs and alcohol. It is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, provides 100mg, suitable for screening and confirmation. When considering EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for determining a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial recording of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for substances. While it is a cost-effective way to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples presumed positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive results occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine tests in Dayton, MN, the benefits are clear. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy, reflecting a more detailed and reliable past substance use picture. The method detects drugs for an extended period, up to 90 days, offering a broader overview of an individual's substance history, which is beyond the capability of conventional urine tests.

Employers that operate under zero-tolerance policies often prefer hair testing because it provides a comprehensive analysis of drug use. Unlike urine tests, hair testing affords a longer detection window. This distinction makes it far more beneficial for situations where accuracy and reliability are paramount, ensuring a lower risk of undetected substance abuse.

Extended Detection Window

In Dayton, MN, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, capable of revealing drug use up to 90 days prior. This extensive detection period provides employers with a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's substance use history, going far beyond the short span typically covered by urine tests.

The advantage of detecting drug use over a longer timeline ensures employers can make more informed hiring decisions. This comprehensive view aids companies in identifying potential issues that could affect workplace safety and productivity, thus enhancing overall organizational well-being.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the standout features of hair follicle testing in Dayton, MN, is its tamper-resistant nature. The process significantly reduces opportunities for sample adulteration, reassuring that the results are both reliable and legitimate. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
