Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Delano, Minnesota. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with testing centers available nationwide. To conduct a test, you typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for substance testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. This method offers a longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, in a secure collection process that's challenging to falsify. However, for identifying drug use within the last five days, a urine test is still more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of these substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair samples can reveal a detection timeline for alcohol and drugs spanning up to three months. It is straightforward to gather hair, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides the optimal 100mg sample needed for evaluation and validation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to gauge the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is lacking, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. In specifying head hair, this pertains strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in processing a drug test result at the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory handling of a specimen within the lab’s system. This phase ensures the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic custody chain.

Screening includes a preliminary swift check for illicit drugs. Screening is a budget-friendly option to eliminate drug use in most specimens, yet a positive result must undergo confirmation to be permissible in legal contexts. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent verification.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are retrieved from hair at much finer concentrations than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence hair drug analysis is notably complex to execute.

Endorsement of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before endorsement as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair code and corroborated with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can disclose drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection scope.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests are exceptionally hard to falsify, ensuring higher accuracy of results.
  • Yields past data: It provides a timeline of drug use, reflecting not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Pricing: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is of the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
