At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Delft, Minnesota. Whether you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, we are hair testing experts, with centers available in all major cities Nationwide to conduct these analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, either from the crown of your head or elsewhere on your body. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the usage of hair follicle drug tests has been on the rise for substance detection. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair testing over the traditional urine tests. Such tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services. Hair follicle tests offer extended detection times of up to 90 days, require observed collections, and are extremely hard to manipulate. Despite this, urine tests remain the most effective for identifying recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a significant method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibrous structure of growing hair strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage for approximately three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for preliminary screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assays, or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to determine the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory system. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any supplementary data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any sample that tests presumptively positive in Screening necessitates a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if deemed necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Subverting a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing its result accuracy.
  • Offers usage history: It presents a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
