Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Dover, Minnesota. For hair or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers across the country equipped to conduct them. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can serve for testing. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly favored the hair follicle method. More workplaces, judicial systems, and professionals in substance abuse fields opt for hair tests over urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary processes often choose hair tests. They offer a detection span of up to 90 days, involve an observed collection, and are almost impossible to cheat, unlike urine tests, which remain best suited for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair strands capture a history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests above 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming the sample's seal and proper shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for the presence of drugs. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use for many samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate another confirmation stage.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any samples identified as presumptively positive are washed before confirmation, if needed. The entire process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is accredited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a 90-day period, which is longer than urine tests.
  • Resistant to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: This method reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug use: Detecting drugs in hair requires 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dover, MN, hair follicle testing clearly surpasses urine testing in several aspects. Hair tests provide a superior detection accuracy over urine tests, especially with their ability to detect a wider range of substances. The reliability of hair testing is unparalleled, making it the preferred choice for many applications.

The benefits of hair testing over urine tests include a much longer detection window, allowing employers and institutions to gain insight into drug use over a more extended period. Unlike urine tests, which only detect recent usage, hair tests offer a comprehensive view.

Extended Detection Window

One of the remarkable advantages of hair follicle testing in Dover, MN, is its extended detection period. Unlike traditional methods, hair testing can uncover drug use over up to 90 days, providing a more complete picture of an individual's substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
