In Duquette, Minnesota, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in this method, we provide services in various locations across the nation. Whether for drugs or alcohol, hair tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of growth from the scalp. Alternative body hair may also be used.

The use of hair follicle tests has risen recently, replacing urine tests among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts due to its extended drug detection of up to 90 days and high resistance to tampering, excluding recent 5-day use where urine tests prevail.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive record of drugs and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can disclose up to roughly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step confirms that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, designates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any outstanding data entry not offered through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be initially positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from the hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is pursued via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples initially positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine testing's shorter detection range.
  • Resistance to tampering: It’s notably arduous to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Yields historical insight: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over an interval, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Detection in hair typically begins around 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is frequently pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle and urine testing in Duquette, MN, reveals hair tests’ superior detection capabilities. Hair tests are favored for their extensive detection window and low potential for manipulation, making them a reliable choice over standard urine tests, which are less effective for long-term detection.
More Accurate Detection: Hair tests are notably more accurate, providing enhanced reliability for organizations with zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Period: Unlike traditional methods, hair follicle testing in Duquette, MN, reviews drug use over a three-month span. This gives employers an exhaustive insight into someone’s substance history, supporting thorough assessments during recruitment or employment.
Employers appreciate this method for its capacity to uncover past drug usage effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Duquette, MN, the tamper-proof nature of hair follicle tests offers an added layer of reliability. It's notoriously challenging to alter or substitute hair samples, providing conclusive results.
Entities consider these tests dependable due to their assurance of authenticity. Such tests are almost immune to adulteration tactics commonly seen with urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
