Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Chain, Minnesota. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with testing centers located nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair are required, or body hair may be used. Hair testing can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over urine tests. Hair tests cater to employers maintaining zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected through an observed process and providing an uncheatable result. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When a sample is taken close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or testing beyond 10 panels, it is advised to collect 150mg of hair. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we are exclusively referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This involves confirming that the specimen was correctly sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data recording absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive result at the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is more challenging, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • No recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual differences in growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair and urine drug tests, hair follicle testing in East Chain, MN stands out for its superior detection reliability. Unlike urine tests that only capture recent use, hair tests provide a detailed and long-term view of substance history, making them an ideal choice for employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals who prioritize accurate and dependable results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug tests offer a significant advantage with their extended detection window, up to 90 days. In East Chain, MN, this comprehensive timeline provides employers a detailed overview of an individual's substance history, giving them confidence in their hiring and monitoring processes. This extensive detection period surpasses that of more conventional drug testing methods, offering thorough insights.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The risk of sample tampering is significantly minimized with hair follicle testing in East Chain, MN. This testing method is designed to preclude adulteration, ensuring reliable and conclusive outcomes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
