Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, hair from the crown or other body parts, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is necessary. Analyzing hair can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Of late, drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle methods. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair tests rather than conventional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests benefit organizations with zero-drug tolerance rules, judiciary bodies, and individuals on probation due to their extended detection capability of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, reducing cheating possibilities. Yet, urine tests remain optimal for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged account of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, it can provide a detection span for drugs and alcohol of up to three months. This method is straightforward to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing around 200 strands of hair (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and confirmation. For add-ons like EtG or testing beyond 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers only to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test includes four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample begins its journey through the lab’s system. This stage ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any missing data documentation if an electronic custody system wasn’t used.

In Screening, the sample is initially tested for drug abuse traces. While this step is budget-friendly and eliminates drug usage in many cases, positive results need confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive in this stage must undergo further confirmation.

For presumptive positives found in the Screening phase, extra strands are extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drug substances are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than alternative tests (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a challenging process.

Confirmation of a positive result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS testing. Samples presumed positive receive cleansing before confirmation if required. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the oversight of both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests reveal drug use history for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a narrower window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating is particularly challenging with hair tests, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: This testing type offers an overview of substance use patterns over time, instead of only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear.
  • Cost: Hair testing typically costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and personal growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
