In Ellsworth, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests for drugs or alcohol, our centers are nationwide, able to conduct hair tests across various cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair analysis can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method of testing in recent years, often replacing standard urine tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now frequently choose hair tests. This is especially true for employers with zero-tolerance policies and for individuals on probation. Hair tests offer the distinct advantage of longer drug detection windows, up to 90 days, administered through an observed collection process, reducing cheating risks. However, for detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Detecting drug and alcohol use through hair testing is now recognized as a robust method. Hair offers an extended historical record of substance use, trapping biomarkers within its growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair yields a detection range for alcohol and drugs of up to three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal screening and confirmation sample involves a 1.5-inch cut of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests over 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab process for determining a drug test outcome involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's early processing into the laboratory system. It checks if the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in lacking data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a quick check for substances of abuse. It is a cost-effective way to eliminate drug use in most instances, but a conclusive court-valid result from a positive screen needs confirmation. Samples presumptively positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair from the original specimen is used for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug tests the most challenging methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. Throughout, from Accessioning to Confirmation, the lab process is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are complex to falsify, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: Offers a pattern of substance use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to track recent use: Drugs typically appear in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth rates can alter the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Despite frequently being termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over urine tests in Ellsworth, MN, are evident. Hair tests offer longer detection windows and higher accuracy levels. While urine tests often only identify recent substance use, hair tests trace drug use for up to 90 days, providing a broader picture of use patterns and aiding in comprehensive assessments.

Employers and organizations in Ellsworth prefer hair testing due to its heightened reliability and difficulty in tampering. Compared to urine tests, hair follicle assessments minimize manipulation chance, thus offering credible and stronger evidence for drug use.

Extended Detection Window

One reason hair follicle testing is favored in Ellsworth, MN, is its extended detection window. Able to trace drug use for up to 90 days, this method surpasses traditional testing methods by capturing a long-term view of an individual's drug use history, critical for employers' evaluations.

In Ellsworth, the comprehensive detection period of hair follicle tests enhances substance assessments by identifying long-term usage. This method provides employers with a robust tool for evaluating candidates or current employees, leaving little room for recent abstinence to mask earlier patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Ellsworth, MN, the tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing makes it an attractive option. This method significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration, providing results that are both reliable and unquestionable, preserving test integrity and ensuring accurate outcomes.

Employers and organizations in Ellsworth can confidently choose hair follicle tests knowing that sample tampering is minimized. This test delivers dependable results, efficiently safeguarding against fraudulent manipulation, thereby securing decision-making processes based on solid evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
