Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Elmore, Minnesota. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in the field of hair testing, with centers available across Nationwide cities ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, you require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In the past few years, the preference for hair follicle drug tests in drug testing has increased. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is utilized by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary contexts. The key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it highly secure. For drug screening within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biological markers within the fibers as it grows, hence offering a prolonged record of alcohol or drug intake. When the hair sample is collected close to the scalp, it can offer an approximated 3-month detection timespan for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A close-to-scalp 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) yields 100mg, an optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to gather 150mg. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. Should scalp hair not be accessible, equivalent body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses other types like facial, axillary hair, etc.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in a drug test lab process: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples showing a presumptive positive result during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive in Screening, additional hair is utilized from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair analysis particularly challenging.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter duration.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Displays a timeline of drug use behavior, not limited to recent episodes.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become apparent in hair typically after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other types.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite presence in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not on the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
