Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Fletcher, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities available in cities across the Nation for these needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice. Hair tests may check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many organizations, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the usual urine tests. They're utilized by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, or for probationary individuals. A major advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, ensuring a nearly foolproof process. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a valuable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. Additionally, hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and can be conveniently transported.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG extensions and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four essential stages in processing a drug test result in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This includes confirming that the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial survey for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be authenticated to be permissible in court. Therefore, samples testing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from the hair at lower concentration levels compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronological insight: It reveals a trend of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
