Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Foley, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing, experts in hair testing, boasting facilities nationwide for hair testing procedures. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the crown or body, is necessary. This form of testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options for hair analysis.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly implemented hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse professionals now often prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine analysis. These tests are crucial for employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. The significant advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection period, spanning up to 90 days, with reliable, observed sample collection processes that resist manipulation. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. The hair retains a historical record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands. Collecting hair near the scalp offers an estimated detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tampering is quite hard, and it's simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If there's no scalp hair available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in the lab processing of a drug testing result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This procedure ensures that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach for excluding drug usage on most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptability. Samples with a presumptive positive Screening result necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than those found in alternative approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirming positive screening outcomes is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistance to tampering: It's exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can trace a pattern of drug use over time and not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
