For EtG, additional tests, or those surpassing 10 panels, a sample of 150 mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Head hair indicates scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where the sample enters the lab system. This entails ensuring the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing required data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although it is an economical method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require a secondary verification.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, more hair is obtained from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screen results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptive positive are cleansed before Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
