Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Forest City, Minnesota. Specializing in hair substance tests, we provide services in cities nationwide, catering to those needing drug or alcohol assessments. Typically, hair samples from the crown or body, usually 1.5 to 2 inches long, suffice. Our tests identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, with options for tailored analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug exams have gained prominence in testing methods. They have become a preferred choice for employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationers utilize these tests. Their primary advantage includes detecting drug use over a period of up to 90 days while being hard to deceive. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When sampled near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We recommend measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unattainable, a similar amount of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This includes confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples that are presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and is readied for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in keeping with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is highly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It can deliver a utilization pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When contrasting hair follicle testing with urine testing in Forest City, MN, one observes distinct benefits. Hair tests excel in detection accuracy, capturing drug use data extensively, while urine tests often detect substances for shorter durations. Hair tests offer reliable insights, rendering the chances of manipulation minimal, making them a preferred choice over urine tests in many scenarios.

The precision of hair follicle tests ensures they capture a broader spectrum of drug consumption history, providing comprehensive insights into an individual's drug use. This makes them particularly advantageous for situations requiring stringent drug screening, such as workplace policies or legal circumstances where accuracy is paramount and traditional urine tests may fall short.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Forest City, MN, offers unparalleled insights. Unlike other methods, these tests can trace drug use over a 90-day span, affording a comprehensive view of an individual’s consumption patterns. This gives employers the ability to evaluate substance use history effectively, aiding in more informed decisions regarding potential hires or existing employees.

This extensive detection capability ensures that employers and authorities are not solely relying on recent short-term behavioral indicators. By providing a detailed timeline of drug use, organizations can better understand an individual's tendencies and make holistic assessments of their suitability for roles that demand sobriety and reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Forest City, MN, present a tamper-resistant testing method, significantly minimizing the potential for sample adulteration. This characteristic ensures that the test results are both reliable and difficult to challenge. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests provide an added layer of security by making it almost impossible for subjects to alter or substitute samples.

The resistance to manipulation underscores the integrity of the testing process, reassuring employers and authorities of the test's authenticity. With the security that hair testing affords, stakeholders can trust the results to be a true reflection of an individual's drug use history, promoting confidence in subsequent decisions based on these results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
