Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Fountain, Minnesota. Whether your need is for a hair drug or alcohol screening, we at Accredited Drug Testing excel in hair testing, with facilities found in every major city across the country that can perform a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body will suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, there's been a significant shift towards hair follicle drug testing for substance detection. Increasingly, employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer it over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero drug tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation departments frequently opt for hair analysis. Its greatest advantage is the extended detection window—up to 90 days, collected securely, and hard to falsify. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, offering a historical record of substance intake. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. Its collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch lock of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assays beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair can be collected. 'Head hair' exclusively refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system, which involves verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipment, designating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplemental data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While screening is an economical means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a screen yielding a positive result needs to be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples deemed presumptively positive during screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab procedure is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing for drugs can identify usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover shorter durations.
  • Resistance to tampering: A hair drug test is notably difficult to cheat, thus ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical usage data: It reveals patterns of drug consumption over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: The appearance of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Inconsistencies in findings: Elements like hair coloration and personal differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
