Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Georgetown, Minnesota. For individuals seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing and have centers nationwide, including every city, ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for analysis. Our hair tests can detect drug, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common. Various entities like employers, judges, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair tests over traditional urine screenings. This is particularly true for employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and on probation individuals. Hair tests offer a superior detection range up to 90 days, ensuring accuracy and deterring tampering. However, for drug usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method to detect substance use. Hair stores a prolonged record of alcohol and drug ingestion by locking biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When cut near the scalp, hair can indicate drug or alcohol use over a timeframe of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to send for testing.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When we refer to head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the first step of integrating the sample into a lab's database. This step checks that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective measure to rule out drugs in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for validity in legal settings. All samples that show a presumptive positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

If a presumptive positive emerges during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted from hair at a far lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a challenging procedure.

To confirm any positive screening outcomes, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed. Any samples that are presumptively positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug exams can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's exceedingly hard to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent drug use: It typically takes 5-7 days for substances to show up in hair analysis.
  • Expense: Hair drug exams generally incur higher costs than alternatives.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the detected levels of drug metabolites.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
