In Ghent, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers a comprehensive range of hair follicle drug testing services. For those needing drug or alcohol testing through hair samples, we excel in these procedures and host centers nationwide, equipped to handle hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required for testing drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized screening options.

Recently, drug screening methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers heavily rely on these tests for a broader detection window, around 90 days, with observed sample collection, making them resistant to manipulation. For recent drug use, however, urine tests remain the most precise within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) from close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively; body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result laboratory process involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step checks that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any necessary data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is an affordable method to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation to stand in legal cases. Samples with a positively presumed outcome in Screening need an additional confirmation.

When a sample has a presumptive positive result at Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection range.
  • Resilience to deceit: Cheating on a hair drug test is challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Provides temporal usage patterns: It can reveal a progression of drug use rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing approaches.
  • Results variability: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair samples.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In comparison to urine tests, hair follicle testing in Ghent, MN presents a clear advantage. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy, capturing a wider window of drug use history. While urine tests focus on recent consumption, hair follicle tests highlight ongoing patterns and long-term use, thereby boosting employer confidence in maintaining a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Ghent, MN extends the detection window for drug use significantly—up to 90 days. This broad timeframe offers employers a detailed view of an individual’s drug history. By detecting repeated usage patterns, it empowers decision-makers to make informed hires and enact policies based on comprehensive substance analyses, strengthening workplace integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

With the advanced technology behind hair follicle testing in Ghent, MN, the possibility of manipulating samples is greatly diminished. These tests provide tamper-resistant results that are trustworthy and clear. Unlike other methods, hair testing requires an observed collection, ensuring the authenticity of the sample and the reliability of the results provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
