Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Granada, Minnesota. Specializing in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, our extensive Nationwide network of testing sites ensures service availability in all cities. Typically, hair samples from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, are sufficient. Our specialized tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customizable options.

Over the years, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, replacing traditional urine tests. This testing method suits zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial processes, and individuals under probation. Key advantages include a 90-day detection window, direct observation during sample collection, and resistance to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain highly accurate for recent drug use detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely acknowledged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen’s weight. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of processing a sample within the laboratory’s system. This step confirms the sample was sealed and dispatched properly, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional information needed if not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptive positives in Screening need further confirmation.

A presumptive positive in the Screening phase prompts further extraction of hair from the specimen. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: Hair testing reflects a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to show up in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine testing in Granada, MN, the advantages of hair testing are clear. The accuracy and reliability in detection are significantly higher, offering better insights into substance use. Hair tests cover a broader spectrum of drugs and can reveal long-term usage patterns, whereas urine tests are more limited in detection durations.

Hair testing provides a more comprehensive overview, especially useful in environments with strict drug usage policies. This superior method minimizes the risk of tampering, ensuring that the results accurately reflect an individual's substance history. This reliability is critical for employers needing thorough assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Granada, MN, offers an extended detection window, providing insights into drug use over the past 90 days. This long period enables employers to assess an individual's substance habits comprehensively, which is invaluable for making informed hiring and employment decisions.

By capturing a broader timeframe of drug use, hair tests allow a detailed view into an applicant or employee's long-term behavior, reducing the risk of overlooking habitual substance use. This ensures that safety and compliance standards within the organization are met effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests implemented in Granada, MN, present a robust solution against sample adulteration, ensuring reliability and indisputable results. The collection and testing process minimizes interference, making it virtually tamper-proof compared to other testing methods like urine tests.

This resistance to tampering makes hair tests a preferred choice for ensuring test integrity. By reducing potential for result manipulation, stakeholders rely on hair test results for dependable information, enhancing the trust in policy compliance and safety measures.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
