Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Granger, Minnesota. Whether your requirement is for a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, offering testing facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common approach for drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer it over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers. The major advantage includes its extended drug detection window, usually extending to 90 days, with samples collected under observation, making it highly tamper-proof. For recently used drugs, particularly within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drug consumption as it grows. A sample taken near the scalp can offer up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the sample's initial integration into the laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any further data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though it is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed before it can be used in legal proceedings. Samples that show a presumed positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

Samples with a presumed positive result in the Screening phase undergo further preparation by extracting more hair from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS procedures. Samples that are tentatively positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: Hair drug tests provide an overview of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent use: Drugs are detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Compared to other drug testing methods, hair drug tests are generally more costly.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, yet it is the hair strand that is analyzed, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Granger, MN The advantages of hair testing over traditional urine tests are prominent. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy as it can detect substance use over a significantly longer period.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
