At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Grove Lake, Minnesota. Whether for drug or alcohol detection, we excel in hair testing and boast centers across all U.S. cities for your convenience. For the majority of tests, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body suffice. Hair assessments can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for drug screening. Businesses, the judicial system, and addiction professionals often opt for hair tests over urine assessments. Such tests cater to workplaces with strict no-drug policies, probation departments, and the judiciary. Hair tests efficiently detect drugs for up to 90 days and are collected under supervision, making tampering difficult. For drugs used within five days, urine remains the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair captures enduring records of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal substance use within roughly a 3-month timeframe. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial fast check for drug misuse. Though Screening is an affordable method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples testing positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo a wash before confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Cheating is challenging: It's notably strenuous to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It outlines a pattern of drug intake over a significant timeframe, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't catch recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth traits can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", this procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
