In Hackensack, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. Specializing in these tests, we provide services nationwide, ensuring accessibility in all cities. Typically, an individual needs 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp, though body hair may also suffice. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle analysis. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts often favor this over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are popular among zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probationers due to their prolonged detection capability of up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting recent substance use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers, hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (equivalent in diameter to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other body areas (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four major stages in lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where a sample is logged into the laboratory's system. This step confirms that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing information not provided by an electronic tracking system.

Screening involves an initial examination for substances. Screening is an economical method for dismissing drug presence in most samples. Nevertheless, a positive result from screening needs further confirmation for legal validity. Any samples preliminarily positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug testing is the most complex to execute.

Any positive screening outcomes are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All preliminary positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to deceive, ensuring more trustworthy results.
  • Offers usage history: They can depict a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days before becoming detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Hackensack, MN. Hair tests provide superior detection and accuracy compared to urine tests. With a detection period extending up to 90 days, they offer more reliable substance identification. Hair testing reduces chances of manipulation, unlike urine tests where tampering is easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
