In Hadley, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs. If you're seeking a drug or alcohol analysis using hair, experts in our field provide specialized testing services at multiple centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Test results can cover a range of substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom exams.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests are becoming a more common component in drug analysis. Employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse are increasingly choosing hair tests over standard urine tests. This is primarily due to the hair test's longer detection timeline, often up to 90 days, secured through observed collection. It's notably hardened against tampering compared to urine tests, yet urine analysis remains best for tracing recent use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It preserves a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair offers an approximate three-month detection duration for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch collection of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, 150mg of the sample is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is advised. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the lab processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This stage verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entries not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid check for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court validity. Samples marked presumptively positive during Screening must proceed to secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is retrieved from the main sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive Screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection span.
  • Complexity in falsifying: Cheating on a hair drug test is incredibly hard, increasing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and avoids the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle tests in Hadley, MN, are heralded for their superior detection capabilities over traditional urine analysis. The in-depth detection provided by hair tests captures substance history over a longer term, ensuring accuracy and consistency. Unlike urine tests, which cover a limited timeframe, hair tests document a detailed timeline of substance use up to 90 days, offering a comprehensive profile.

The advantages of hair testing stand evident through its resistance to tampering and cheating, challenging to achieve with urine samples. With hair testing, zero-tolerance drug policies become more enforceable, backed by robust and unalterable results. This contrasts with urine tests, vulnerable to manipulation, underscoring hair testing's role as a reliable alternative.

Extended Detection Window

In Hadley, MN, the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing significantly enhances substance monitoring capabilities. Hair tests can unveil drug use history for as long as 90 days, providing employers complete insights into an individual's substance consumption patterns. This extended timeframe surpasses traditional tests, enabling a more comprehensive overview of one's usage habits.

Employers prioritize this feature, as it aids in making informed hiring decisions and helps monitor ongoing employee conduct. By covering an extended detection duration, this method ensures a thorough review of an individual's past behavior, reinforcing trust in the hiring process and maintaining workplace safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Hadley, MN, proposes a robust solution to circumvent sample tampering. This test method significantly decreases the chances of adulteration, offering an unchangeable and trustworthy means of drug analysis. Hair samples are impervious to most tampering tactics that typically undermine urine tests, ensuring the authenticity of results.

This tamper-resistant nature is a pivotal factor for employers requiring absolute integrity in test results. The inherent resistance to alteration provides peace of mind and makes these tests indispensable in upholding strict workplace drug policies. Reliability in samples guarantees pristine results, pivotal for maintaining safety and compliance standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
