Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hanley Falls, Minnesota. For those in need of alcohol or drug hair testing, our expertise in this field is available across all cities nationwide, including Hanley Falls. Typically, for a successful test, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is needed. These assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other hair testing requirements.

Lately, hair follicle testing has gained traction in drug testing practices. Employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists increasingly demand this method over standard urine tests. This test is essential for workplaces with strict drug-free policies, court orders, and probation cases. Its standout advantage is its ability to track drug use for a prolonged period, typically up to 90 days, with difficult-to-manipulate, observed collections. Despite this, urine tests remain essential for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug exposure by trapping biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an estimated 3-month detection timeline for drugs and alcohol. It's easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and straightforward to mail.

A cluster of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a corresponding amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result entail four core stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s database. This involves confirming that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any ancillary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody set-up.

Screening signifies a preliminary rapid detection for drug abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples that exhibit a presumptive positive in Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex method to execute.

Positive screening confirmations are executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the authority of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug testing is very difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It provides a historical consumption pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often incurs higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcome: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", this assessment examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
