Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Hanover, Minnesota. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair assessments with testing sites in cities nationwide able to execute such procedures. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has increased in recent years. Increasingly, employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts opt for a hair drug test over a urine test because it offers longer detection periods, lasting up to 90 days, and it is challenging to manipulate due to its observed collection process. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, which includes about 200 strands, provides 100mg, an ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests and tests requiring more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. The term "head hair" specifically means scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other hair types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test processing entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial sample processing within a lab’s system. It involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that isn’t provided by an electronic custody chain.

Screening includes a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is economically efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptance. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require verification.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thereby making the results more accurate.
  • Historical insight: Provides a usage pattern over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other test methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hanover, MN, hair follicle testing holds significant advantages over urine testing. Due to its ability to trace drug use for up to 90 days, it offers a broader window of detection compared to standard urine tests.

Employers and legal systems favor hair testing because it provides a clearer, more comprehensive picture of an individual's drug use history. This accuracy and extended detection period underscore its superiority over traditional urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing stands out for its extended detection window, offering insights into an individual's drug use over a lengthy period, typically up to 90 days.

This extended window is a significant advantage for employers who require a thorough assessment of their employees' substance use histories, ensuring better-informed employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
