Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Harding, Minnesota. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area. We have testing locations in all cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas suffices. Our hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in the drug testing procedures. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals may require a hair drug test instead of the traditional urine test. Employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation utilize hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage is it offers a longer detection period, up to 90 days, collected in a monitored setting, making it nearly unfoolable. Nevertheless, for substance detection within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly perceived as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands preserve a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, these samples can offer roughly up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp amounts to 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale for precise sample weighing. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically indicates scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in a laboratory drug test analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step includes checking that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If a sample tests presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is readied for Extraction. At this stage, the drug contents are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify past drug use up to 90 days back, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Chronological data provision: It illustrates a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs require around 5-7 days post-consumption to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand, not the scalp-embedded hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
