Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests in Harris, Minnesota. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is supported by a network of centers nationwide, including all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body suffices for testing. Options include analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle testing has increasingly become part of drug screening protocols. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts favor it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for employers with strict drug policies, judicial assessments, and probationary individuals. Its main advantage is a lengthy detection span of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. Still, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests hold accuracy superiority.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair encapsulates a long-term history of these substances by integrating biomarkers into the fibers during hair growth. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a proportional quantity of body hair can be obtained. When talking about head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. All other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.) are termed as body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain-of-custody system.

Screening entails a fast initial examination for drugs of abuse. This step is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, though a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that screen as presumptively positive require secondary confirmation.

When a sample screens as presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection time frame.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, offering more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: It provides an account of drug usage over time, beyond only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: There is a 5-7 day window before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Harris, MN outperforms urine testing in several ways. One key advantage is detection accuracy; hair tests identify drug use over an extended period, unlike urine tests, which are limited to recent usage. This comprehensive detection capability makes hair testing superior for contexts where individuals may attempt to mask their substance use, providing more reliable insights into past behaviors.

Urine tests may miss drug use after a few days, but hair tests cover a much broader timeline. Their robustness and resistance to cheating make them an ideal choice for employers with strict drug policies and legal entities requiring solid evidence of abstinence from substances. Hair tests eliminate the loopholes that urine tests may present, ensuring fairness and transparency in the detection process.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Harris, MN offers a unique advantage with its extended detection window, often spanning up to 90 days. This long-term perspective allows employers to assess an applicant or employee’s substance use history comprehensively. Unlike traditional testing methods, which only provide a snapshot, hair testing offers insights into patterns and frequency of use, instrumental for making informed employment decisions.

The longevity of the detection period makes it ideal for identifying habitual use rather than one-off incidents. Employers seeking a thorough understanding of an individual's drug use will find hair testing invaluable. By revealing a more complete history of substance use, it enables businesses to uphold their safety and productivity standards more effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Harris, MN significantly reduces the possibility of tampered samples, providing a reliable solution for both employers and individuals. The collection method directly from the head or body leaves little room for adulteration or substitution, ensuring the integrity of each test. As a deterrent for potential manipulators, hair tests reinforce the credibility of the results.

Its resistance to tampering sets hair follicle testing apart, providing peace of mind to all parties involved. This robust testing method leaves little opportunity for interference, guaranteeing that the results obtained are authentic and trustworthy. Employers and legal entities can confidently depend on these tests for accurate and straightforward substance use reporting, devoid of manipulation risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
