Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle analyses in Holloway, Minnesota. When you need testing for substances, our centers perform hair analysis nationwide. Body hair, if it's 1.5 to 2 inches, is often sufficient. Hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG and more customized options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more common in substance screening. Employers, courts, and specialists prefer them over traditional urine tests, especially for zero-tolerance policies. They provide a 90-day detection window and are almost tamper-proof, compared to urine tests that excel in detecting recent substance use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal sample for assessment and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory's system. This entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective means to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen mandates validation for judicial acceptability. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is collected from the initial specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which adds complexity to hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is washed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus enhancing the precision of results.
  • Yields historical insight: It delineates a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not merely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests incur higher costs relative to other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, excluding the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Holloway, MN

Hair testing outperforms urine tests by providing a larger detection window, capturing substance use up to 90 days prior. This extends its utility beyond recent use detection, offering a comprehensive view for Holloway employers. It's also less prone to tampering, a concern often present with urine samples, further enhancing its reliability.

Traditional urine tests, though effective in certain timelines, cannot match the prolonged detection hair tests offer. This benefit is crucial for employers enforcing drug-free policies over a more extended period. The accuracy of hair follicle testing in identifying a wide range of substances also ensures an untainted assessment of an individual's substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Holloway, MN

Hair follicle testing excels with its extended detection window of up to 90 days, unmatched by other testing methods. For employers in Holloway, this capability is invaluable, providing a detailed understanding of an individual's substance use history. This comprehensive timeframe aids employers in making well-informed hiring decisions and maintaining safety.

The prolonged window allows for a broader and more accurate basis of assessment. Employers gain insight into an applicant's past behavior, ensuring consistent compliance within the workplace. This ability to view up to three months' worth of substance use data supports maintaining a robust, drug-free environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Holloway, MN

Hair follicle tests are a tamper-resistant solution to substance testing in Holloway that dramatically reduces the chance of sample adulteration. Their design ensures that results remain valid and indisputable. This method counters common tampering strategies seen with other tests, giving employers dependable, accurate insights into employees' substance use.

Unlike other testing methods, hair samples cannot be easily altered or substituted, ensuring the integrity of the test result. Such reliability is crucial for employers needing to maintain strict workplace compliance, offering peace of mind that the sample tested truly represents the subject's recent substance use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
