Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Huntley, Minnesota. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers available in every city across the Nation capable of performing a hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other hair testing options.

Recently, drug testing practices have increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial courts, and those on probation frequently rely on hair follicle drug tests. Its main advantage is its extensive detection period, often up to 90 days, observed during collection, and extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for drug usage detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to alter, and easy to transport.

Taking a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for substance misuse. Although Screening presents a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires verification for legal acceptability. Samples presumptively positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample shows positive results in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples marked preliminarily positive are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug examinations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceptionally hard to deceive a hair drug examination, rendering the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can present a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to be uncovered in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are often pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand and not the root beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
