Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Iona, Minnesota. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise lies in hair testing—available at numerous testing locations nationwide, including hair tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options. Generally, test samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body.

Increased reliance on hair follicle testing has emerged in recent years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair drug tests over urine tests, as it is essential for zero-tolerance policies and probation cases. The primary advantage of hair testing is its longer detection span of up to 90 days, with collections conducted under supervision, thereby reducing cheating opportunities. However, urine tests remain most effective for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained from near the scalp, it can reveal drug or alcohol use for about 90 days. Hair is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for analysis and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent body hair sample may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result consists of four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a test sample into a lab's system. This encompasses confirming the sample's seal and proper shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening offers a rapid preliminary assessment for various drugs. Despite being a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive result from screening necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary validation.

For samples yielding presumptive positives during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and set up for Extraction. In this step, substances are removed from hair at more diluted levels than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most intricate to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before verification as needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection interval: Hair analysis can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, not only recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: Substances become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically entail higher costs compared to other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair pigmentation and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
