Situated in Isanti, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in performing hair tests through an extensive network of testing centers across various cities nationwide. With 1.5 to 2 inches of hair (from the head or body), tests can effectively detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific analysis needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prevalence in the realm of drug testing methodologies. Various entities including employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair sample analysis over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, as well as the judicial system and those under probationary measures. The chief advantage is the extended detection capability, allowing for identification of drug usage over approximately 90 days. While the collection process is supervised and challenging to invalidate, for substances used in the past five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged historical record of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within the hair fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can deliver up to a three-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send for analysis.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (roughly matching the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is needed to acquire 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal quantity of body hair is an alternative. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair; body hair includes other hair types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The primary phases of lab processing for drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This entails verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most cases, positive results require confirmation to be legally defensible. Samples indicating potential positives during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample tests potentially positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive specimens are washed before confirmation if necessary. The lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine testing, which has a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: The accuracy of hair drug testing is improved due to its difficulty to be cheated.
  • Historical usage data: It offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days post-consumption to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive compared to other drug test techniques.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the testing focuses on analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
