Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Janesville, Minnesota. Should you require such testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, with facilities nationwide, ready to conduct hair analyses. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, these tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more, tailored to your needs.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly included the hair follicle method. Numerous employers, judiciary entities, and addiction experts prefer hair over urine tests. Hair follicle examinations are chosen by those with strict no-drug mandates, the justice system, and those serving probation. Their main advantage is a detection span reaching 90 days, collected under supervision, making cheating improbable. However, for recent use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have become an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair records a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes other varieties (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for analyzing drug test results in a laboratory includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially processed into the laboratory system. It entails ensuring the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional information absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial test for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, court-admissible results require confirmation of any positive screen. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening will need further confirmation.

In cases where Screening is presumptively positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any Screening positivity is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive receive a wash before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike the briefer detection span of urine tests.
  • Difficult to evade: Tampering with hair drug tests is challenging, improving result reliability.
  • Consistent data: Offers a pattern of drug use over time, not only immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Doesn’t reveal recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drug presence to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically dearer than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistencies: Drug metabolite levels may vary due to hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination pertains to the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
