Located in Kimball, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing excels in comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Those requiring a hair or alcohol test can benefit from our specialization in these services. Boasting testing centers across all US cities, we offer convenience and proficiency. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required for testing. Our evaluations detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customizable testing options.

In recent times, trends in drug testing include an increase in hair follicle drug tests. These tests are often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probation officers rely on hair testing. A key advantage is its ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, coupled with observed collection and resistance to manipulation. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of about three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches and including around 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processing of a sample in a laboratory’s system. This stage includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any other data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples that screen positive preliminarily require another confirmation stage.

If a sample tests positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is gathered from the originating specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves drawing out drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection time.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Yields historical data: It provides a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual procedure analyzes the strand of hair and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing in Kimball, MN, the former emerges as a superior option in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing boasts a more extended detection window, enhancing the capability to identify substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
