Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lakeland, Minnesota. When a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with a network of centers in cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for testing. Hair can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Such tests serve well for those with zero drug tolerance policies, individuals on probation, and court-related screenings. The main advantage is the extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, with an observed collection method that is hard to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibrous growing structure. When extracted near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a span of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, quite resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommended 150mg should be obtained. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair is acceptable. Note that when discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (such as facial and axillary hair, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's admission into the lab’s system, including sample integrity checks regarding sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input beyond what an electronic custody chain provides.

Screening performs an initial rapid detection of illicit substances. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug usage on most samples, a positive screen mandates further confirmation to be accepted in legal contexts. Any presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation step.

For presumptively positive samples from Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and set up for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), supporting the premise that hair drug tests are amongst the most challenging types to conduct.

Analyzing any positive screening results involves methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, potential positive samples undergo washing as needed. The overall laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes assessment under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and follows accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage spanning up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a much shorter time frame.
  • Challenges in manipulation: The challenge of manipulating hair tests enhances result reliability.
  • Tracks patterns of use: It can outline a timeline of drug usage beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed as "hair follicle tests", the assessment scrutinizes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
