At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle tests for drugs in Long Beach, Minnesota. Whether you require a test for substances or alcohol, we are experts in hair testing and provide services through our nationwide centers. You typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, though body hair can also be used. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing options.

Hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug testing recently. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly favor it over traditional urine tests. It's preferred by organizations with strict drug use policies, courts, and probationers. The primary advantage is its extensive detection period for drug use, generally up to 90 days, with observed sampling to prevent tampering. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of drinking and substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period stretching up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, poses challenges for tampering, and is convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for testing and confirmatory analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. Here, head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Overview of the Process

The laboratory workflow for processing a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This process ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional data entry beyond what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening provides an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. Although screening is a budget-friendly method mainly used to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive screen result needs verification to be court-admissible. Samples indicative of a positive result in screening need confirmatory testing.

Should a sample appear positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging method to execute.

Confirming positive screening outcomes involves using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleaned as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Proof against tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to bypass, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Records past patterns: They can reveal drug use trends over time rather than merely recent usage.

Challenges:

  • Inability to catch recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is commonly used, though the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
