At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right here in Lonsdale, Minnesota. If a hair test for drugs or alcohol is required, our speciality in hair testing is complemented by our widespread testing facilities across the nation, all prepared to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches either from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specific hair testing necessities.

The trend toward incorporating hair follicle drug tests has amplified in recent years. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug testing over traditional urine methods. Hair follicle tests serve zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary assessments. The central advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, and almost immune to tampering. Yet, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an invaluable means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered from the scalp area, hair can reveal up to an approximate 3-month period of alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, making it an ideal specimen for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. In instances where scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" refers to all other hair types (face, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for processing a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step involves verifying that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and inputting any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive screenings indeed require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample return a presumptively positive result during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drug extraction occurs at notably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screenings present the greatest challenges in methodology.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the designation from the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Retains historical usage: Offers a chronological trace of drug consumption over an extended timeframe, as opposed to recent usage solely.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • More expensive: Hair drug testing is often costlier than alternative drug testing options.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the level of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", the assay actually examines the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
