Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Luce, Minnesota. Whether you require a hair drug test or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing with testing facilities available in every city nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly common approach to drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests rather than standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and individuals on probation. Their main advantage is a longer drug use detection period, typically up to 90 days, combined with an observed collection process that is almost impossible to tamper with. However, for identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust instrument for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's girth) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for examination and verification. For EtG, additional elements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to gauge the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be retrieved. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other categories (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test outcome entails four primary procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This step includes ensuring the sample is appropriately sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out an initial rapid evaluation for substance misuse. Although Screening presents a cost-effective strategy to dismiss drug use in most samples, to be valid in legal scenarios, a positive screen necessitates confirmation. Samples with presumptive positive outcomes in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more strands are extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis poses the greatest challenge.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug assessments can uncover drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more dependable outcomes.
  • Delivers trend data: It can outline a trend of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur more costs than other testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug byproducts in the hair.

Note: Despite being often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
