Accredited Drug Testing provides all-inclusive hair follicle drug tests in Maple Lake, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with centers nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or body. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair test options.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has become more common. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests to traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies for drugs, courts, and probationary supervision often use hair tests. The main advantage of hair follicle testing is a detection window that extends up to 90 days, it is collected through an observed process, minimizing the chance of tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling is recognized as a formidable means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by entrapping biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, tougher to tamper, and convenient to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which serves as the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair may be taken. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair. All other hair (facial, axillary, etc.) is deemed body hair.

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory results processing of a drug test encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. It entails confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are eluted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical data provision: It delivers a trajectory of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
