Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Max, Minnesota. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have centers in every city in the country for your hair testing needs. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the head or body. Our hair tests can detect a variety of substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug screenings. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug testing over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers often use hair tests due to their extended detection window, typically 90 days, and the minimal opportunity for tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the best choice for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair strands provide an extended record of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can offer roughly a 90-day detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of specimen is advised. It's advisable to assess the specimen’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab testing process for drug testing comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's framework. This step verifies correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive sample, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation in Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and aligned with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Provides a trend of drug use over time, rather than immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods in Max, MN, hair follicle testing typically outperforms urine testing. The benefits of hair testing are evident as they deliver a higher detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which cover a shorter period and are easier to manipulate, hair tests offer a more credible option for employers seeking reliable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
